   <title>To extend notebook battery life with hybrid drive</title>
   <description><![CDATA[<p>The trick is that the hard drive contains a 1Gb flash memory chip from Samsung's OneNAND family. Incoming data is directly recorded to the chip. When the chip is about full, the hard drive wakes up, takes the data,<a href="http://www.batteriesshop.co.uk/">laptop batteries</a>,records it and goes back into idle.</p>
<p>Typically, hard drives rotate. Hard drive motors, along with LCD screens, are two of the largest consumers of power inside a laptop.</p>
<p>In the hybrid, the drive rarely spins. In the prototype hybrid being shown off on Monday at the Windows Hardware Engineering Conference, the drive spins only about 30 to 45 seconds every half hour, said Ivan Greenberg, director of strategic marketing for Samsung Semiconductor. The goal is to get it to 30 to 45 seconds for an hour.</p>
<p>"The traditional hard drive takes up about 10 to 15 percent of the battery power of your notebook," Greenberg said. The company often tries to get different divisions to cooperate to help reduce costs, improve performance and, ideally, increase profitability. Samsung's rise in mobile phones has come in part because of increased cooperation between industrial designers and component groups at the company.</p>

   <title>Why notebook batteries don't last long?</title>
   <description><![CDATA[<p>&nbsp;Ever since I switched from using a desktop PC to a notebook for all of my daily computer tasks I never bothered to look back. It is just so convenient to always be able to carry all your work with you wherever you go. In reality I am not much of a road warrior though so most of the time the <a href="http://www.batteriesshop.co.uk/">notebook battery</a> sits on my desk for weeks on end attached to its docking station. <br /><br />Obviously when plugged into the mains during the day the notebook's battery never gets used. However every time you turn the notebook off at the end of the day it will drain the battery ever so slightly overnight and will start to top it off again when it gets turned back on. The question is whether that will wear down the battery quicker than if you simply drain the battery and then reconnect the notebook to the mains adapter to recharge it a few times a day?<br /><br />Over the past eight months I have done exactly that experiment, by using two identical notebooks. One has been connected to the mains adapter all the time, being used for approximately eight hours every day, the other has had its battery drained and recharged, usually once a day, but has also been running for eight hours every day. The results are somewhat surprising. The notebook that has been connected to the mains has a flat battery now, basically you get about ten maybe twenty minutes worth of power out of it before the notebook goes into standby. Maybe notebook manufacturers should make mention of this? Or allow for the battery to drop to 80% of its capacity prior to topping it off again?    <title>Will the reusable alkaline battery have a future?</title>
   <description><![CDATA[<p>The reusable alkaline was introduced in 1992 as an alternative to disposable <a href="http://www.batteriesshop.co.uk/">batteries</a>. The battery was promoted as a low-cost power source for consumer goods. Attempts were made to open markets for wireless communications, medical and defense. But the big breakthrough never came. Today, the reusable alkaline occupies only a small market and its use is limited to portable entertainment devices and flashlights. The lack of market appeal is regrettable when considering the environmental benefit of having to discard fewer batteries. It is said that the manufacturing cost of the reusable alkaline is only marginally higher than the primary cell. <br /><br />The idea of recharging alkaline batteries is not new. Although not endorsed by manufacturers, ordinary alkaline batteries have been recharged in households for many years. Recharging these batteries is only effective, however, if the cells have been discharged to less than 50% of their total capacity. The number of recharges depends solely on the depth of discharge and is limited to a few cycles at best. With each recharge, the amount of capacity the cell can hold is reduced. There is a cautionary advisory. Charging ordinary alkaline <strong><a href="http://www.batteriesshop.co.uk/hp.html" target="_blank">hp laptop battery</a></strong><br />may generate hydrogen gas, which can lead to explosion. It is not prudent to charge ordinary alkaline unsupervised.<br /><br />The reusable alkaline is designed for repeated recharge. Also here,, there is a loss of charge acceptance with each recharge. The longevity of the reusable alkaline is a direct function of the depth of discharge; the deeper the discharge,<a href="http://www.batteriesshop.co.uk/hp-pavilion-dv8000.htm" target="_blank">hp <strong>pavilion dv8000 battery </strong></a>, the fewer cycles the battery can endure.<br /><br />Tests performed by Cadex on 'AA' reusable alkaline cells showed a high capacity reading on the first discharge. In fact, the energy density was similar to that of nickel-metal-hydride. After the battery was fully discharged and recharged using the manufacturer's charger, the reusable alkaline settled at 60%, a capacity slightly below that of nickel-cadmium. Repeat cycling in the same manner resulted in a fractional capacity loss with each cycle. The discharge current in the tests was adjusted to 200mA (0.2 C-rate, or one fifth of the rated capacity); the end-of-discharge threshold was set to 1V/cell.<a href="http://www.batteriesshop.co.uk/hp-omnibook-xe3.htm" target="_blank"><strong>omnibook xe3</strong> battery</a>.<br /><br />An additional limitation of the reusable alkaline system is its high internal resistance, resulting in a load current capability of only 400mA (lower than 400mA provides better results). Although adequate for portable radios receivers,<a href="http://www.batteriesshop.co.uk/hp-pp2182d.htm" target="_blank">pp2182d battery</a>, CD players, tape players and flashlights, 400mA is insufficient to power most mobile phones and video cameras.<br /><br />The reusable alkaline is inexpensive to buy but the cost per cycle is high when compared to other rechargeable batteries. Whereas nickel-cadmium checks in at $0.04US per cycle based on 1500 cycles, the reusable alkaline costs $0.50 based on 10 full discharge cycles. For many applications, this seemingly high cost is still economical when compared to primary alkaline that provides a one-time use. By only partially discharging the reusable alkaline, an improved cycle life is possible. At 50% depth of discharge, <a href="http://www.batteriesshop.co.uk/hp-pavilion-dv9000.htm" target="_blank"><strong>pavilion dv9000</strong> battery</a>, 50 cycles can be expected.<br /><br />To compare the operating cost between the standard and reusable alkaline, a study was done on flashlight batteries for hospital use. The reusable alkaline achieved measurable cost savings in the low?intensity care unit in which the flashlights were used only occasionally. The high-intensity care unit, which used the flashlights constantly, did not attain the same result. Deeper discharge and more frequent recharge reduced the service life and offset any cost advantage over the standard alkaline <a href="http://www.batteriesshop.co.uk/hp-pavilion-zv5000-series.htm" target="_blank">pavilion zv5000 battery</a>.<br /><br />When considering reusable alkaline, one must realize that the initial energy is slightly lower than that of the standard alkaline.    <title>Modern Lead Battery Systems</title>
   <description><![CDATA[<p>With the efforts of going green, there is renewed interest in finding new battery systems for wheeled mobility and automotive applications to lower our dependency of hydrocarbon. This page summarizes the work done with lead-based chemistries.(<a href="http://www.batteriesshop.co.uk/">Notebook battery</a>) <br /><br />When compiling data of new <a href="http://www.batteriesshop.co.uk/toshiba-pa3250u-1brs.htm" target="_blank">toshiba pa3250u-1brs</a> system, the battery inventors are leaning towards publishing the positive attributes and the negatives are kept under wraps. This is why much hyped systems that show great potential on paper do not always make it to commercial applications but quietly die. </p>
<p><strong>Firefly Energy</strong><br /><br />The composite plate material of the Firefly Energy <a href="http://www.batteriesshop.co.uk/toshiba-pa3356u-1brs.htm" target="_blank">toshiba pa3356u-1brs</a> is based on a lead acid system that is lighter, longer living and has higher active material utilization than current lead acid systems. The first battery reaching the market will include foam electrodes for the negative plates. The performance is comparable to NiMH with possible lower manufacturing costs. A design concern is microtubule blockage caused by PbSO4 crystal growth that will be dominant during low discharge conditions. In addition, crystal expansion could cause surface area reduction. Firefly Energy is a spin-off of Caterpillar. </p>
<p><strong>Axion Power</strong><br /><br />The Axion Power e3 Supercell is a hybrid <a href="http://www.batteriesshop.co.uk/toshiba-pa3291u-1brs.htm" target="_blank">toshiba pa3291u-1brs</a>/ultracapacitor in which the positive electrode is standard lead dioxide and the negative electrode is activated carbon. The assembly process is similar to lead acid. The Axion Power battery is aimed at the hybrid car market and the company claims faster recharge times and longer cycle life on deep discharge than with customary lead acid systems. Specifications show a low power density of 12Wh/kg. </p>
<p><strong>Altraverda</strong><br /><br />Like Firefly Energy, the Altraverda <a href="http://www.batteriesshop.co.uk/toshiba-pa3506u-1brs.htm" target="_blank">toshiba pa3506u-1brs</a> is based on lead acid, using a proprietary titanium sub-oxide ceramic structure [Ebonex] for the grid, and AGM separators. The un-pasted plate contains Ebonex particles in a polymer matrix with a thin lead alloy foil on the external surfaces. The energy density is 50-60Wh/kg. Based in the UK, Altraverda is working with East Penn in the USA, Exide in India and Vladar Enterprise in the Ukraine. </p>
<p><strong>CSIRO Ultrabattery</strong><br /><br />The CSIRO Ultra <a href="http://www.batteriesshop.co.uk/toshiba-pa3591u-1brs.htm" target="_blank">toshiba pa3591u-1brs</a><a href="http://www.batteriesshop.co.uk/toshiba-satellite-a65-series.htm" target="_blank"></a> combines an asymmetric ultracapacitor and a lead acid battery in each cell. The capacitor enhances the power and lifetime of the battery by acting as a buffer during charging and discharging. The technology has been licensed to Furukawa Battery. The lifetime is 4 times longer than customary lead acid systems and produces 50% more power. It is also 70% cheaper to make than current hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) batteries. CSIRO batteries are undergoing road trials in a Honda Insight HEV and show good results. </p>
<p><strong>EEStor</strong><br /><br />This is the mystery battery/ultracapacitor that receives much media attention. The battery is based on modified barium titanate ceramic powder. EEStor claims that the battery has a specific energy of up to 280Wh/kg. The company is very secretive about their invention and only limited information is available. Financial Post,<a href="http://www.batteriesshop.co.uk/sony-pcga-bp2nx.htm" target="_blank"><strong>sony pcga-bp2nx</strong></a>, <a href="http://www.batteriesshop.co.uk/sony-pcga-bp2r.htm" target="_blank"><strong>sony pcga-bp2r</strong></a> 26 June 2008 compares EEStor with specifications of NiMH and customary lead acid systems. </p>

   <title>The lithium-ion battery</title>
   <description><![CDATA[<p>Pioneer work with the lithium <a href="http://www.batteriesshop.co.uk/">battery</a> began in 1912 under G.N. Lewis but it was not until the early 1970s when the first non-rechargeable lithium batteries became commercially available. lithium is the lightest of all metals, has the greatest electrochemical potential and provides the largest energy density for weight.<br /><br />Attempts to develop rechargeable lithium <a href="http://www.batteriesshop.co.uk/toshiba.html" target="_blank">Toshiba laptop battery</a> failed due to safety problems. Because of the inherent instability of lithium metal, especially during charging, research shifted to a non-metallic lithium battery using lithium ions. Although slightly lower in energy density than lithium metal, lithium-ion is safe, provided certain precautions are met when charging and discharging. In 1991, the Sony Corporation commercialized the first lithium-ion battery. Other manufacturers followed suit. <br /><br />The energy density of lithium-ion is typically twice that of the standard nickel-cadmium. There is potential for higher energy densities. The load characteristics are reasonably good and behave similarly to nickel-cadmium in terms of discharge. The high cell voltage of 3.6 volts allows <a href="http://www.batteriesshop.co.uk/toshiba-pa3383u-1brs.htm" target="_blank">toshiba pa3383u-1brs</a> pack designs with only one cell. Most of today's mobile phones run on a single cell. A nickel-based pack would require three 1.2-volt cells connected in series.<br /><br />Lithium-ion is a low maintenance battery, an advantage that most other chemistries cannot claim. There is no memory and no scheduled cycling is required to prolong the <a href="http://www.batteriesshop.co.uk/toshiba-pa3384u-1brs.htm" target="_blank">toshiba pa3384u-1brs</a>'s life. In addition, the self-discharge is less than half compared to nickel-cadmium, making lithium-ion well suited for modern fuel gauge applications. lithium-ion cells cause little harm when disposed.<br /><br />Despite its overall advantages, lithium-ion has its drawbacks. It is fragile and requires a protection circuit to maintain safe operation. Built into each pack, the protection circuit limits the peak voltage of each cell during charge and prevents the cell voltage from dropping too low on discharge. In addition, the cell temperature is monitored to prevent temperature extremes. The maximum charge and discharge current on most packs are is limited to between 1C and 2C. With these precautions in place,<a href="http://www.batteriesshop.co.uk/toshiba-pa3285u-1brs.htm" target="_blank">toshiba pa3285u-1brs</a>, the possibility of metallic lithium plating occurring due to overcharge is virtually eliminated.<br /><br />Aging is a concern with most lithium-ion <a href="http://www.batteriesshop.co.uk/toshiba-pa3191u-1brs.htm" target="_blank">toshiba pa3191u-1brs</a> and many manufacturers remain silent about this issue. Some capacity deterioration is noticeable after one year, whether the battery is in use or not. The battery frequently fails after two or three years. It should be noted that other chemistries also have age-related degenerative effects. This is especially true for nickel-metal-hydride if exposed to high ambient temperatures. At the same time, lithium-ion packs are known to have served for five years in some applications. <br /><br />Manufacturers are constantly improving lithium-ion. New and enhanced chemical combinations are introduced every six months or so. With such rapid progress,<a href="http://www.batteriesshop.co.uk/toshiba-pa3166u-1brs.htm" target="_blank">toshiba pa3166u-1brs</a>, it is difficult to assess how well the revised battery will age. <br /><br />Storage in a cool place slows the aging process of lithium-ion (and other chemistries). Manufacturers recommend storage temperatures of 15&deg;C (59&deg;F). In addition, the battery should be partially charged during <a href="http://www.batteriesshop.co.uk/toshiba-pa3331u-1brs.htm" target="_blank">toshiba pa3331u-1brs</a> storage. The manufacturer recommends a 40% charge.<br /><br />The most economical lithium-ion <a href="http://www.batteriesshop.co.uk/toshiba-pa3399u-1brs.htm" target="_blank">toshiba pa3399u-1brs</a> in terms of cost-to-energy ratio is the cylindrical 18650 (18 is the diameter and 650 the length in mm). This cell is used for mobile computing and other applications that do not demand ultra-thin geometry. If a slim pack is required, the prismatic lithium-ion cell is the best choice.
